Do people drive too fast in your estate?

3rd December 2014

December 3, 2014 – Independent Councillor Jennifer Whitmore is conducting a public consultation on speed limits in housing estates and is asking for people to get in touch with her if they have speeding problems in their areas.

Whitmore says: “The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and Wicklow County Council are currently investigating the speed limits in residential areas and housing estates to improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians, especially children.

“To assist in this, Wicklow County Council is compiling a list of 30 estates in the county where there may be speeding problems. These 30 estates will be used as a pilot scheme to see what impact reducing the speed limit to 30km/hr and improving signage has on the speeding problems.

“There is a question around whether this study will include estates that the Council has yet to take in charge, such as Holywell in Kilcoole and Charlesland in Greystones. These estates have very many young families, with associated traffic safety concerns, and I believe they should certainly be included in this study.  I have asked Independent TD, Stephen Donnelly to get clarity on these from the Ministers for Justice and Environment.

“The Greystones Municipal District will be asked to nominate five estates as part of this pilot. I ask people to contact me if you feel that your estate has a problem with speeding, and I will put it forward to be included in the pilot scheme.”
