Funding allocated to make Chapel Road safe

19th March 2016

March 18th, 2016 – Social Democrat Cllr. Jennifer Whitmore and Stephen Donnelly, TD welcome the news that the National Transport Authority (NTA) has agreed to fund safety works on Chapel Road, Delgany in order to provide a safe walking route to St. Laurence’s School.

Cllr.Whitmore said:

‘As a parent in St. Laurence’s, and from working closely with the Parents Association, the NTA, WCC and the school for a number of years on this issue, I know from personal experience how dangerous this stretch of road is. Last December, Stephen and I held a meeting where we asked members of the public to email the Minister for Transport and NTA to raise awareness of the safety concerns for pedestrians. I am delighted to say that that campaign has worked and the NTA has agreed to fund the safety works.

Deputy Donnelly said:

‘I would like to thank everybody that wrote to the Minister and the NTA with their personal stories about Chapel Road. This funding from the NTA will make the walk to school considerably safer for the children of St. Laurence’s. I am delighted that the NTA has agreed to fund these important safety upgrades and listened to the public’s concerns. Jennifer and I will also continue to work with Wicklow County Council to try to get a HGV restriction on the road from 8.30 AM to 9.30 AM and from 1.30 PM to 2.30 PM to further improve safety.
