Whitmore calls for Commuter Park ‘n Rides on N11

23rd February 2017

Social Democrat Cllr. Jennifer Whitmore has called for Wicklow County Council to examine the possibility of locating a series of Park ‘n Ride carparks on the N11, to assist with commuters travelling into Dublin from County Wicklow.

Whitmore said “Anyone travelling from south county Wicklow into Dublin over the past couple of years will have seen a significant increase in travelling times into the city. Wicklow is one of the largest commuter counties in the country, with over 48% of Wicklow residents working outside of the county, the majority of which travel to Dublin. In addition, the population in Wicklow is projected to grow by 20k by 2020 (from 2011 figures) so it becoming increasingly important that easy, quick and sustainable transport solutions are provided to enable people to access work.

“One option would be to provide a number of Park ’n Rides, located just off the N11, where commuters can park their car and jump onto an express bus into Dublin. It would, in turn, assist in taking significant numbers of cars off the roads. Potential locations include interchanges near Arklow, Ashford or Greystones. Ideally this would be done in conjunction with providing bus lanes on the route.

Whitmore continued “For example, the Park ‘n Ride in Greystones is proving to be very popular and its 500 spaces are full before 8am each morning. It has been suggested that a large number of these cars are travelling from south county Wicklow to avail of the Dart transport link into Dublin. This shows that Park ‘n Rides can work very well. I think we just need to increase the number of Park ’n Rides available for people and to ensure that they are easily accessible from the N11 and that they offer a fast and reliable bus network into the city.
