Social Democrat Cllr. Jennifer Whitmore has welcomed this week’s announcement of a public consultation into the rent pressure zones by the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government.
Whitmore said “I have been critical of the design and implementation of the rent pressures zone programme since it’s inception. In particular, I do not believe that Greystones should have been left out of the rent pressure zones as the district sees one on the highest rents in the country. I am frequently contacted by people who need to leave the area as they can no longer afford the rents. Greystones only missed out being included in the 4% increase cap by 0.2% – I believe this was a mistake.
Whitmore continued “I also question the data upon which this system is based. According to this system, Greystones recorded a reduction in rents of nearly 4% in Q2 2016, which does not ring true with what I’ve heard locally. It is my opinion that all tenants should be protected from significant rises in rent, regardless of what area they live in.”
Whitmore said “I would encourage all tenants and landlords to engage with this process and to send their submission into the Department and to have their say on the impacts of the measure to date. I will also be lodging a submission to the Department on this issue. If anyone would like to email me with their experiences or stories, I will include them in my submission. My email address is [email protected] and I welcome input from all parties.”
